A customer reached out to me and asked if I can fabricate an extractor for his Coonan. I’ve heard about this gun before but never saw it in flesh, so obviously I had to do some research first.

Coonan Arms produced several variations of the 1911-like pistol chambered in .357 Magnum for a relatively short time, but now they are very rare, and no spare parts are available except several standard 1911 components that can be used in Coonan. Well, the extractor is not one of them.

I posted a question on several forums and one Coonan owner got back to me. I asked him if he can mail the slide to me so that I can remove the extractor and measure it, but unfortunately this was not an option. He did agree to remove the extractor from his gun, take some pictures and measurements, well, it’s better than nothing.

First, I created a 3D model and printed it in PLA. Then I traced the part on a piece of 1/8″ thick steel and started filing it down. And here’s the final result:

A few adjustments and the new extractor goes into the slide. I hand cycled a magazine of .357 and everything worked as it should. I will test fire the gun just to be sure and it will be on its way back to the owner.
